Solar PV and hot water installation
in Waterloo, Ontario
The solar energy installation on my house in Waterloo consists of a 3kw grid tied solar PV array and a single panel hot water heating system.
The solar PV array is mounted on a South West facing roof and is made up of 18 –
167 watt panels. My system has been running since the summer of 2005 and has produced an average of 3487 kilowatt hours per year since that time. My total home electricity consumption is just under 3000 kilowatt hours annually so my house is actually a net producer of electricity.
The solar water heating panel was installed in the spring of 2008 and is mounted on the South East facing roof of my house. From June through September I was able to completely turn off my back up natural gas water heater and use exclusively solar heated water. During the summer months the solar system heated the water to a temperature of 65 degrees Celsius. The system also works well on sunny winter days. On one January day when the outside temperature was -14 degrees my solar water tank was preheated to 35 degrees.
